A texture Stencil, finished with two or three glazes of color

Stencils can be used to add detail and pattern to any decor.  Most commonly, they are used as accents, border treatment or overall pattern on walls, ceilings, floors and furniture.

A dimensional effect can be achieved by using a texture medium that can be hand colored or glazed.  Tromp L'oeil illusions, such as wall niche, fountain or window, can be created with shading and shadowing techniques.  Take a look at the Stencil Projects section.

Florentine Scroll

Florentine Scroll is a texture finish with two or three glazes of color.  The scroll design is embossed from the surface creating a unique old-world look. The dimensional stencils on top can be placed in a random pattern or as a border treatment.

Grapevine Stencil - Taste of Tuscany

This old world finish creates an aged effect with stencils.  It combines a free form stenciled grapes under glazes and textured medium producing a crumbling plaster effect.  A Melanie Royals design.

Harlequin Pattern

This classic pattern was created with a diamond shaped stencil using a silver glaze over an iridescent pearl glaze.  A "fleur-de-lis" stencil was used over the points in metallic gold. This stencil pattern simulates an expensive harlequin-patterned wallpaper.

Carved Arched Panel

This stencil pattern helps to create the look of a carved wood panel.  It can be applied to the lower third section of a wall, below chair rail molding.

Gilding under Glass

This design was created with a Modello masking pattern on the reverse side of a glass panel.  The oxidized gold leaf creates an interesting effect.  The black and bronze background paint was applied with a sea sponge.  This technique can be used for backsplashes or ornamental wall panels framed with molding.

Gilded Fairy under Glass

This artwork was created with a Modello masking pattern. The design was gilded with imitation varigated gold leaf on the reverse side of a glass panel.  The black and bronze paint background applied with a sea sponge. This technique can be used on table toppers, backsplashes, or ornamental panels.

Dimensional Stencil

Dimensional stenciling adds a lot of texture to a room and can be use on any hard surface. This stenciling technique can be used to create borders, faux-tile backsplashes and other elements.  This sample shows a glazed texture finish with an overall dimensional stencil pattern.  Imagine a chair rail on a wall separating the two sections.

Floral Stencil and Stripes

A floral motif stencil with coordinating color-washed, bold stripes.

Showcase Scroll

This advanced stencil design was created with a blend of six different colors and shades.  This Melanie Royals stencil design has a traditional and formal character that lends itself to be perfect for dining or living rooms.

Shell & Vine

This sample stencil design offers a subtle but elegant accent against a faux finish background.  It can be used as a focal point to a kitchen backsplash.

Cartouche

This Cartouche design is ideal for above entry doorways or windows.
